If you have ever suffered through water damage before, you fully understand what a headache it can be! Even just an inch of water can cause a costly and extensive cleanup process, and when you are a business owner, that can be detrimental to your livelihood.
Since water is all around us and serves so many purposes in our day-to-day lives, water damage can come from all kinds of sources. Faulty pipes, appliances and sprinkler systems are all common reasons we have seen when businesses suffer damage. We also see damage from Mother Nature often.
We recently just marked 50 years since the 1972 Black Hills flood that decimated our area, so we are fully aware of the dangers that flooding and other water issues can bring to town. Being prepared can help minimize the extent of your damages.
Locating Your Utility Room
Knowing this simple information can help stop a problem in its tracks! Having a full knowledge of your water shutoff valves and electrical panels is a great thing to know if you are a business owner.
You shouldn’t keep this information to yourself, though! Share this with your leadership team or management staff so that someone is always prepared to take action when it is needed.
Water Dangers
Did you know that water is classified into different categories? Different kinds of water carry different risk levels, so it is important to know where the water came from so you can act appropriately.
White water: White water is the lowest risk water (other than purified consumable water). It is the water that flows inside your pipes and is safe for you to handle.
Gray water: Wherever water flows down into a drain, like from a sink or a shower, that is called gray water. It is considered contaminated, but still carries a relatively low risk when handled in small amounts.
Black water: Never attempt to clean up a black water problem on your own. Black water comes from your sewage system or storm drain and can contain toxic materials.
Stop the Problem Right Away
The best thing to do when you discover your water issue is to shut off the source of the problem immediately! Turn off any water valves or main lines, and then start to vent the space.
Turn on fans and open some windows to get the air circulating. It is also a good idea to section off the affected area to keep people safe.
It is also really important to take thorough pictures of any damages that you see. This will make your insurance claim process much easier if you have accurate pictures of the issue at hand.
